THE ASSIGNMENT
Create a composition divided into all six color schemes – monochromatic, analogous, complementary, triad, split and double complementary – with a light source that drives tints, tones and shades.
RESEARCH & INSPIRATION
I chose orchids as my reference because their petals have strong contrast between white edges and deep purple centers. The second image adds warm side light from a window, giving a clear light source for tints, tones and shades.
IDEATION & SKETCHES
I sketched three layouts that divide the composition into six numbered sections, one for each color scheme. I chose the middle one: its curved shapes look like a plant leaf and connect naturally to my orchid reference.
ITERATION & DEVELOPMENT
I planned the colors for each of the six schemes on a chart and in a digital color draft, then labeled the sections on my tracing. After transferring it to Bristol board, I started painting from the top, where the window light is strongest.
